Rim Rock Ranch is a privately owned property approximately 10 miles north of Sisters. Squaw Creek runs through the property, providing a mile of fairly pristine riparian area. Juniper and upland sage, with scattered pine, cover the rest of the property. The landowners have allowed us access to the property and this is important because Rim Rock Ranch is typical of much of the private land in that area. An understanding of the bird life there will allow us to extrapolate information about land to which we do not have access.
Volunteer Requirements: Some walking is required (much of which is up hill) and experience identifying birds by sight and sound is required for a trip leader. This is private property. Access is limited and permission to access the property must be obtained prior to any given survey. Surveys are done throughout the year with several scheduled in the spring and summer months. 4-8 Surveyors are needed per survey.
Methods: This is a very simple area search. Teams are assigned a route to walk (or drive) and they identify and count every bird they see or hear. Other volunteers are welcome to come along and help locate and identify birds. A running checklist is updated after every survey.
Non-field Volunteer Help: If you have publishing skills, a person is needed to take the bird species list that has been generated and create a checklist. The checklist would need to be updated as time goes by.
