 Guided Bird Trips

$150 for a full day (any number of people)

All money goes directly to ECBC and bird conservation

You provide the vehicle or gas – We provide a guide or two.

Here’s your opportunity to hire a local expert and design a custom birding day to meet your needs.  It’s up to you: Are there target birds you would like to see?  Maybe you would like to visit a range of habitats … or just have a fun day out birding.

The schedule is up to you.  In the spring and summer the birds are most active first thing, and we will pick you up at first light if you want!  As an organization dedicated to bird conservation we encourage ethical birding and therefore minimize the use of tapes and iPods to locate birds.  If birding for a full day we encourage you to bring snacks and a packed lunch as we will often be away from stores.

Guides are local birders who are fun and know the area very well:

Judy Merideth, Dean Hale, Tom Crabtree, Chuck Gates and are all long-term residents of Central Oregon , board members of ECBC and know the sites and birds very well.

Howard Hovath and Jim Moodie are local, well know birders.

Steve Dougill and Peter Lowe are two Brits that often team up.

Lori Turner is a USFS biologist for the Sisters Ranger District and will give you a guided trip in the Cascades while filling you in on the management, history and wildlife.

Tim Rodenkirk lives in Coos Bay and will lead trips on the south Oregon coast and the coast range.  He is a well know Oregon birder and an extremely knowledgeable on much of the other wildlife to be found.

Tim Shermadine lives in Portland and can introduce you to the fantastic North Oregon Coast and the Willamette Valley.  He is a well know Oregon birder who helps guide pelagic trips off the coast.

All guides are volunteering their time, as they love birds and showing them to people.  We will work with you to find a day(s) that work for everyone.

Some suggestions, although you can customize you day(s) however you would like:

March – Fort Rock for Raptors and Sage Grouse Leking

Spring - Thousands of Snow and Ross's Geese at Malhure.

Summer – Summer Lake, Eastern Crook County, Cascades, Ochocos, Klamath basin for all the Cascades and Great Basin specialty birds.

Fall – Lake Abert for the spectacle of 200,000 phalaropes, or Coos Bay for other shorebirds and coast species

Winter - Willamette Valley for Geese and wildfowl

On previous trips we have found most of the target birds people have been searching for and showed off some of the spectacular scenery Oregon is famous for.  One trip was lucky enough to find all the local breeding woodpeckers (including three-toed).  We have breeding Tri-colored Blackbirds and Ferruginous Hawks in Crook County.  Bitterns, Egrets, Avocets and Pelicans at Summer Lake.  Desert sparrows, Sage thrashers and Loggerhead Shrikes in the Great Basin.  There are fantastic birding opportunities here.
